Indo-Chinese Fusion Delight: The Ultimate Low-Oil Chilli Chicken Recipe

As we all know, Chilli Chicken is one of the popular Indo-Chinese dish that has taken the world by storm. It's a perfect blend of sweet, sour, and spicy flavors that make it an irresistible treat for your taste buds. Whether you're looking for a party appetizer or a quick dinner fix, this recipe is a go-to option that is sure to impress everyone.


This is one of our family favourite. I make this in air fryer, so the oil that goes into the making is very less compared to deep frying. Inspite of it, it tastes amazing. Also, this recipe is quick and easy to prepare, and it requires only a few basic ingredients that you can easily find in your pantry. Indo-Chinese Fusion Delight: The Ultimate Chilli Chicken Recipe


Section 1: Ingredients Required


For Marination for chicken

250 grams chicken boneless chicken breast or thighs

1 and ½ tsp red chilli sauce

1 and ½ soya sauce or coconut aminos

¼ tsp pepper powder

2-3 tbsp corn starch

1and ½-2 tbsp maida or White flour

¼ tsp red cilli powder(optional)

1/8 tsp gralic powder

1/8 tsp salt or to taste

1 egg white


for preparing chilli chicken

1 and 1/2-2 tbsp oil vegetable oil

1 tbsp soya sauce or coconut aminos

2 table spoon red chilli sauce

2 tablespoon tamato ketchup

½ tsp red chilli powder(Kashmiri chilli powder for colour)

¼ tsp pepper powder

¾ to 1 tsp vinegar

½-1 tsp sugar

2-3 tbsp water

1 medium onion cubed

1 tbsp garlic

¼ -1/2 cup bell pepper cubed

1-2 green chilli and deseeded

1-3 table spoon spring onion greens to garish


Section 2: Equipment Required

Air Fryer: if you are frying in a air fryer (Now if you do not have air-fryer you can use grill or oven as well.)

Section 4: Directions

  1. Cut the chicken into bite-sized pieces: Start by cutting boneless chicken breasts or thighs into small bite-sized pieces that will be easy to marinate and cook.

  2. Clean the chicken: Wash the chicken pieces thoroughly under running water to remove any dirt or impurities. Let it dry by itself or pat dry with a paper towel.

  3. Marinate the chicken: In a bowl, mix together 1 and 1/2 tsp red chilli sauce, 1 and 1/2 tbsp soya sauce, 1/4 tsp pepper powder, 2-3 tbsp corn starch, 1 and 1/2 - 2 tbsp maida, 1/4 tsp red chilli powder, 1/8 tsp salt, and 1 egg white(use little by little as required to coat). Add 250 grams chicken pieces to the marinade and mix well. Let it marinate in the referegerator for at least 30 minutes.

  4. Preheat the air fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 375°F for 5 minutes. ( you can cook it by grilling or baking as well)

  5. brush the air basket or spray oil on the basket.

  6. Air fry the chicken: Place the chicken pieces in the air fryer basket in a single layer, making sure they are not touching each other. Air fry the chicken for 8-10 minutes, flipping the pieces halfway through.

  7. Add sauces and spices: Add 1 tbsp soya sauce, 2 tbsp red chilli sauce, 2 tbsp tomato ketchup, 1/2 tsp red chilli powder, 1/4 tsp pepper powder, 3/4 - 1 tsp vinegar, and 1/2 - 1 tsp sugar to a bowl. Stir well to combine.

  8. Cook the sauce: While the chicken is cooking, in a pan, heat 1 and 1/2 tbsp oil over medium heat. 1 tbsp chopped garlic, and when it turns light brown add 1 medium chopped onion, green chiily and 1/4 - 1/2 cup cubed bell pepper. Stir-fry for 1-2 minutes or until the vegetables are slightly tender. Then finally add sauces and spices.

  9. Add water: Add 2-3 tbsp water to the pan and stir well. This will help create a slightly thick sauce.

  10. Add fried chicken: Once the chicken in the air fryer is done, add it to the pan with the sauce and toss until the chicken is evenly coated.

  11. Add spring onion greens: Add 1-3 tbsp spring onion greens to the pan and give it a final toss.

  12. Serve: Your air fryer chilli chicken is ready to serve! Garnish with some more spring onion greens and enjoy.
